Yes, the movie has visual appeal, but its borderline moronic. My apologies, it is moronic. This is a movie that tries to be intelligent but wastes an interesting concept. I find it hard to believe that scientists would allow a crazy lady with her dog roam the facilities. Science is observations, but the leaps these twits constantly make are based on no observation. I mean how does ones dodge a stationary surveillance camera? Whos lets their children talk to them like that? How would this lady be competent enough to hold this job based on what theyve shown of her. This movie was poor and lacked any sophistication. That aside, I feel Little Joe stands well on its own. It pays homage whether by intent or accident. Alfred Hitchcock would have adored this film. The casting is perfect. The director presents many nuances that string together for a well paced and constantly moving tense yet subtle ride. I was also amazed at the moments I was startled enough to jump a little in my seat, which does not happen easily for me. Beecham is great as other reviewers have mentioned and all in all the acting it on point too. I just felt like this was a great idea but not a compelling enough story for a feature film. I watched this movie because it had a Philip k. Dick appeal to it. Aesthetically the movie was enjoyable. I very much enjoyed the Kabuki music as it reminded me of Japanese theater and there were some elements to go with that. However, I also feel like it was over used specially with several chords being known to increase suspense but no real unveiling of it.
The ending leads you to believe that the reason the main character is so full throughout the movie is because she was the first to get infected and I can only assume it was pre-virus mutation. As she makes the dumbest choices that could only be explained by her need to spread the flower. Why else break a poisonous flower out of the lab. The character developments before their infection was poor, the only person you see a change (post infection) in personality was the mental crone who stays unaffected through a good portion of the movie. Because of the lack of character change it made the infection very unimpactful. If the main character wasn't infected the whole time then she is a significant case of denial as she notices no change in personality with any character without being told they were acting different even forward her own son. Making her a self absorbed characterless sponge.
I did enjoy the movie though I know I could have dosed off throughout the movie and still been on track.
